Marvel Studios Announcements from D23 Expo 2019

Continuing my effort to keep fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) updated on what’s next after Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home – here is a roundup of all the new announcements Marvel Studios made during D23 Expo 2019 over the weekend. I highly recommend reading my blog post on Phase 4 of the MCU here first so that you can see how everything fits together with the new announcements from D23.

Black Panther 2 (May 6th, 2022):

Black Panther 2 announced at D23 Expo 2019 with Kevin Feige and Ryan Coogler on stage.

Director Ryan Coogler, who directed the first Black Panther film, joined Kevin Feige on stage at D23 to announce he is returning to direct Black Panther 2 which be released on May 6th, 2022. “Black Panther 2” is not the final title of the film – they apparently just finished the first treatment of the story for the sequel and are not ready yet to reveal the title. They are “taking their time to get it right” with the sequel.

In terms of Phase 4, it was announced the SDCC earlier this summer that Thor: Love and Thunder was the last film in Phase 4. With Black Panther 2 hitting theaters the spring after Thor: Love and Thunder – it is unclear whether Black Panther 2 is the final movie in Phase 4 or the first movie in Phase 5. Everything from Marvel Studios from D23 has been carefully worded to not mention which phase Black Panther 2 belongs to.

New Details for The Eternals:

The Eternals hits theaters November 6th, 2020 and at D23 they announced 3 new cast members. arry Keoghan, playing “Druig”, Gemma Chan who will be playing “Sersi” and Kit Harrington will be playing “Dane Whitman” (a non-Eternal character called “Black Knight”). They also showed artwork from the film of all the cast in costume.

Marvel Studios revealed some more details around the already announced Disney+ shows.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (2020): Emily VanCamp is returning as Sharon Carter who was last seen in Captain America: Civil War and Peggy Carter’s niece. Additionally, it was announced that Wyatt Russell will be playing John Walker – a character fans will recognize as U.S. Agent.

WandaVision (2021): Kat Dennings is returning as Darcy last see in Thor: The Dark World. And Randall Park is returning as FBI Agent Woo last seen in Ant-Man and the Wasp.

What If… (2021): Hayley Atwell with be returning to voice of Peggy Carter in this animated show about “what if” certain events in the MCU turned out differently than what happened in the movies.

New Disney+ Shows Announced:

Marvel Studios announced 3 new Disney+ shows at D23: Moon Knight,  Ms. Marvel, and She Hulk. There was no information of dates or casting for these new shows.

Marvel announced Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Spider-Man: Far From Home marks the end of what Marvel now refers to as The Infinity Saga. The Infinity Saga is all the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies from Phase 1 – 3. And at San Diego Comic-Con last week, Marvel unveiled the line-up for Phase 4 which kicks off a new series of storylines. Phase 4 consists not only of new movies but also a new series of shows that will be part of the new Disney+ streaming service that tie-in directly to the movies. Here is the outline of Phase 4:

Black Widow (May 1st, 2020):

The first new movie of Phase 4 kicks off with Scarlett Johansson reprising her role of Natasha Romanoff AKA The Black Widow. Joining here is David Harbour as Alexei AKA The Red Guardian, Florence Pugh as Yelena, O-T Fagbenle as Mason, and Rachel Weisz as Melina. Not much is known about the plot but the movie is thought to be a prequel and takes place immediately following Captain America: Civil War which saw Natasha on the run.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (Fall 2020):

This is the first Marvel Studios show developed for Disney’s new streaming service called Disney+. It picks up after the events of Avengers: Endgame, and follows Sam Wilson AKA The Falcon and Bucky Barnes AKA The Winter Soldier—in a series of action-filled adventures. Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan reprise their roles and Daniel Brühl will return as the villain Baron Zemo last seen in Captain America: Civil War. Rumor has it that during this series, we will see Sam Wilson officially take over as the new Captain America.

The Eternals (November 6th, 2020):

This movie will introduce a new team of heroes in the MCU not unlike what Guardians of the Galaxy did. The movie stars Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (February 12th, 2021):

This movie will introduce another new hero to the MCU which will bring together several pieces hinted at in previous MCU movies going all the way back to Iron Man in 2008. The movie stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Awkwafina in a yet-to-be-disclosed role, and Chinese actor Tony Leung as the REAL Mandarin. If you recall in Iron Man 3, a fake version of the Mandarin was hired by Aldrich Killian and played by Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley). In the Marvel One Shot “All Hail the King”, the real Mandarin sends one of his followers to visit Trevor Slattery in jail. I imagine we’ll see these elements play a part in this movie.

WandaVision (Spring 2021):

This will be another Disney+ series and see Paul Bettany reprising the role of Vision and Elizabeth Olsen returning to the role of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. Additionally, it was revealed that Teyonah Parris will be playing the grown-up version of Monica Rambeau, who was introduced in Captain Marvel as a kid.

Loki (Spring 2021):

This will also be a Disney+ series that stars Tom Hiddleston as Loki. It will answer the question of “Where did Loki go when he took the Space Stone (the Tesseract)?” in Avengers: Endgame.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (May 7th, 2021):

In the sequel to Doctor Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch returns as Doctor Stephen Strange and Elizabeth Olsen joins him as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. The events of the Disney+ series WandaVision will tie-in directly to the movie’s plot.

What If…? (Summer 2021):

This show will be on Disney+ and will be the first animated series in the MCU. The show will tell stories that present alternate realities in the Marvel Universe. Many of the actors from across the MCU will reprise their roles as voice talent in the series however Jeffrey Wright will be the voice of the popular character The Watcher in the series.

Hawkeye (Fall 2021):

Another Disney+ show which has Jeremy Renner returning to the role of Clint Barton AKA Hawkeye. The show will introduce Kate Bishop, a character well-known in Marvel Comics. It is believed that in the show, Clint Barton will hand over the role of Hawkeye to Kate Bishop.

Thor: Love and Thunder (November 5th, 2021):

In the 4th Thor movie, Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson return to their roles. And Natalie Portman returns as Jane Foster who will become the Mighty Thor just like in the comics. Thor was last seen heading off with the Guardians of the Galaxy at the end of Avengers: Endgame.

Phase 5 + Beyond:

Marvel Studios has their Phase 5 plans nearly locked but I don’t imagine we’ll hear much on this for another year or two. However Marvel Studios Chief Kevin Feige has confirmed that Black Panther 2, Captain Marvel 2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the next Spider-Man are in active development and likely part of Phase 5. For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Director and Writer James Gunn returns and will be focusing on this once he completes his next movie which is The Suicide Squad for DC/Warner Bros.

Marvel Studios also announced at SDCC that actor Mahershala Ali will be Blade in the MCU with a new Blade movie coming! You may recongnize the actor – Mahershala played the villain Cornell Stokes AKA Cottonmouth in the first season of the Marvel/Netflix show Luke Cage.

As a huge fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I plan to continue to blog about the developments from Marvel Studios to help other fans stay on top of what’s going on with these movies and now TV shows.

A letter of support for ANOVOS

UPDATE 2023: I was a naive little nerd when I wrote this blog post back in 2019. At the time, I loved the ANOVOS Starfleet uniforms I had purchased and received. I loved the quality and attention to detail. In my mind, I felt like I was owning production-quality uniforms from the various Star Trek shows and movies. I felt that waiting on the things I ordered was acceptable if it meant getting these really cool high-quality unforms. And I had thousands of dollars in pre-orders for more. I wanted to say thanks to the company for their work. They didn’t ask me to write this as I did so on my own. Then in September 2021, it seemed ANOVOS had completely disappeared with what appeared to be members from ANOVOS going on to form this other company called DENUO NOVO. TrekCore reported on the situation. Star Trek fans, including me, who had pre-orders waiting to be fulfilled from ANOVOS were told nothing with absolutely zero communication from ANOVOS about what had happened. It’s 2023 now and there has still not been any communication regarding the outstanding ANOVOS pre-orders. This has been a lesson for me in writing blog posts that seemingly endorse companies like I did here with ANOVOS and looking like a shill and then ended up looking even more stupid. Sadly, the new company DENUO NOVO has the Star Wars license. If you are a Star Wars fan, I highly recommend NOT buying anything from this new company, despite their insistence they have nothing to do with ANOVOS. Clearly, something shady happened with ANOVOS and DENUO NOVO and you should not trust ordering anything from them.

Yesterday, the co-founders of ANOVOS published an article on their website explaining what has been going on with regards to significant delays to many of their products pre-ordered by customers. The cause, they say, is due to “complex burden of accuracy”. The company is making some adjustments to be better at getting products out into the hands of customers. As a customer who has several products pre-ordered that has been delayed (some of which delayed quite a bit…), I wanted to write a letter of support for the company because their products are simply stunning and amazing when you get them and completely worth the wait.

So, who is ANOVOS? ANOVOS is a small company that specializes in producing screen-accurate and highly detailed replica costumes and props from Star Wars, Star Trek, Ghostbusters, Marvel and a few others. Their products are very popular, especially with Star Wars and Star Trek fans with many fans wearing their product to conventions. Through their licensors like LucasFilm or CBS, they get access to the exact costumes and props used in the TV and movies to create their products allowing them to truly specialize in creating products that are incredibly accurate. And this is what attracted me to purchasing ANOVOS products: accuracy.

As a Star Trek fan – I’ve always wanted to own screen-accurate uniforms from the TV shows and movies. When it comes to Star Trek, I am extremely detailed orientated. DETAILS MATTER! A Star Trek uniform from Rubie’s isn’t going to cut it for me. I want to feel like what I’m wearing is exactly what they wore on the show. When ANOVOS came to the table with their uniforms for Star Trek – I was excited someone was finally doing this and specializing in accuracy. My very first ANOVOS purchase was the Captain Picard jacket as seen being worn by Captain Picard in the later seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation. And I was blown away by the quality and accuracy. I wore it around work like Captain Picard wore it around the Enterprise.

The way ANOVOS works is they solicit a product and then open it up for pre-orders. Usually when they solicit the product, it’s in the prototype stage with development of the product on-going. The pre-orders are limited to a certain number or sometimes in waves. Filling that number ensures they can produce the product. Often, you’re in a waiting game on a product you pre-order as ANOVOS develops the product for manufacturing. I currently have several pre-orders – some of which I made nearly two years ago. What has caused delays in getting products to customers is the process of producing these products can ben immensely complex due to the focus on accuracy. ANOVOS hopes to make changes that avoids having to decrease their focus on accuracy but shrinks the time it takes to get products out to customers.

I completely support ANOVOS in their efforts. But I also don’t mind waiting. The products I’ve purchased from them have been amazing. I mean, simply incredible. I’m not upset I have pre-orders going back almost 2 years because I know what I’ll get will be stunning and reflect incredible quality. The main issue for me is simply lack of transparency on the ongoing development of the products I pre-ordered and resulting delays. I want to see ANOVOS do a better job communicating with customers because I think that will make a HUGE difference. When you order products from ANOVOS, you’re getting the best-of-the-best so its best to reset your expectations of having something be immediately available but know you’re getting something awesome.

I’m currently waiting on several products from ANOVOS I’m really excited about including:

I am so excited about these products and can’t wait to show them off! ANOVOS has my complete support and as long as they continue to make awesome costumes and props from Star Trek and Ghostbusters, they have my business.
