Moved to Ghost!
I recently decided to move my blog from WordPress to Ghost and I am mostly moved over. I didn’t make the choice to move because of all the current WordPress drama. I wanted a simpler platform for my blog with the ability to do a newsletter in a really easy way. In addition to blogging, I am seeing a lot of folks doing newsletters too. And Ghost came highly recommended by some friends of mine. The idea I am toying with is doing round-ups of various “nerd things” that catch my attention with a bit of commentary that would be newsletters people can subscribe to. In general, I want to get back to writing blogs about things that interest me, not necessarily Microsoft related, as I miss having this outlet to express myself.
The process of moving over to Ghost was pretty easy. You sign-up for a Ghost account and then can use the Ghost WordPress plugin to export out a “Ghost File” which is just a .zip file containing a JSON file and all the images from your WordPress site. In case trying to get a .zip file doesn’t work; you can download just the JSON file. I ran into issues with the .zip file importing all my blog images into Ghost. There is a migration guide in case the images don’t come in but I ran into issues, so I ended up having to go in and fix all the broken images in all my blog posts which has taken a bit of time. I haven’t blogged a lot over the years, so it wasn’t too bad to have to do this and it allowed me to revisit some of my old posts which was interesting. I am still working on fixing some issues. After I got most of this setup, I setup a custom domain in Ghost and got everything redirected appropriately. Ghost provides a concierge for customers which has been absolutely amazing and helping me with some questions as part of migration.
I have turned off the newsletter sign-up/subscription functionality for right now until I can correct some of the remaining issues and then get some new content ready to go to support having a newsletter.
More to come!
